Cycling and walking
Cyclists and pedestrians reliably counted – at junctions, cross-sections and crossings.
What we record
- Cyclists and pedestrians by direction – at junctions, cross-sections and crossings
- Use of carriageway, cycle path and footway, e.g. before and after a redesign
- Together with motor traffic in a single survey
- On request, interactions between motor vehicles and cyclists, e.g. overtaking distances
What you use the data for
Cycling planning
Robust figures for network planning, prioritisation and the design of cycling infrastructure.
Before-and-after studies
Make the effect of a redesign measurable – with the same method before and after.
Junctions & crossings
Include pedestrians and cyclists in capacity assessments and in the planning of crossings.
Where people actually cross
On calmed or redesigned streets we record every crossing movement along the section – at crossings and between them, with frequency and time of day. That shows whether people cross where the planning expects them to.
Measured before and after
In a research project we analysed cycling automatically from video before and after a new cycle path was built – with the same method each time, so the change is directly comparable.
